Directorate General for Maritime Affairs paid a visit to TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) on 28 January 2022. During the meeting, the parties made presentations on cooperation areas.
The meeting on potential cooperation areas was attended by TÜBİTAK MAM President Prof. Ahmet YOZGATLIGİL, Director General for Maritime Affairs Mr. Ünal BAYLAN, Kocaeli Harbor Head Mr. Erol EKMEKÇİ, TÜBİTAK MAM Vice President and TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute (KARE) Director Prof. Burcu ÖZSOY, DGM Training and Certification Department Head Mr. Özer ÖZBEY, TÜBİTAK MAM Air Quality Management Group Member Assoc. Prof. Haldun KARAN, TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute Research Specialist Capt. Doğaç Baybars IŞILER and Capt. Eng.Msc. Sinan YİRMİBEŞOĞLU, TÜBİTAK MAM Sea and Inland Waters Group Member Senior Research Specialist Ms. Aslı Süha GÜNAY, DGM Maritime Survey Engineers Mr. Tolga SANAL and Mr. Esat GÜZEL.
At the meeting on potential areas of cooperation between the two institutions, Assoc. Prof. Haldun KARAN from TÜBİTAK MAM Air Quality Management Group made a presentation on the "Feasibility Project for Improving Maritime Education and Training". The targets of the project to focus on 4 main work packages are as follows:
- Determining the training needs of ship crew, especially a training ship and a virtual training ship,
- Conducting feasibility studies for establishing a model ship-aided harbor pilot training center,
- Conducting a feasibility study for the establishment of a "Training Center for Safety at Sea", which will consist of "Fire Training" and "Survival at Sea Training" units to turn theoretical information into practice,
- And carrying out a feasibility study for a mobile "Maritime Training Unit" in order to attract interest and love for maritime at young ages.
TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute specialist Capt. Doğaç Baybars IŞILER made presentations on "TÜBİTAK MAM's Polar Research Studies" giving information on the fields of work and activity of TÜBİTAK MAM KARE. The potential for new collaborations was revealed by exchanging ideas in different fields such as ship operations in logistics processes in both the Arctic Ocean and the Southern Ocean, ship training for polar researchers, and the production and operation of ice class ships in Türkiye in the coming periods.
Then, Chief Research Specialist Aslı Süha GÜNAY made a presentation to the participants about the studies and projects carried out by TÜBİTAK MAM within the scope of maritime activities. The presentation provided chronological information about the projects and their results, which were initiated in 2006 with the Prime Ministry Undersecretariat of Maritime Affairs (Abolished) and then jointly carried out with UDHB General Directorate of Shipyards and Coastal Structures (Abolished) and UDHB General Directorate for Regulating Marine and Inland Waters (Abolished).
These projects are briefly as follows;
- Project for the Control and Management of Harmful Aquatic Organisms Transferred by Ships’ Ballast Water
- Project for the Establishment of Emergency Response Centers and Determination of Current Situation in Various Centers (Aid, Search and Rescue and Emergency Response Automation System [YAKAMOS] has been developed and National Emergency Response and Maritime Safety Center [UDEM] has been designed.)
- Ballast Water Risk Assessment Software Project
- Feasibility Study for Development of Flow and Pollutant Dissemination Model for Turkish Seas
