Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) was officially established in 2011 along with the opening of International Project Office by the Australian University of Tasmania Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), as a result of the joint initiatives of SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and SCOR (Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research).
The SOOS community, building a network of stakeholders and contributors working together in line with the missions and objectives defined, outlines a 5-Year Implementation Plan including facilitating the design and implementation of a multidisciplinary observation system for the Southern Ocean.
An article in the SOOS Bulletin, authored by Prof. Burcu Özsoy, the Vice President of Climate Change and Sustainability as well as the Manager of Polar Sciences and Polar Logistics in TÜBİTAK MAM, featured the Polar Research Studies in Türkiye as part of Turkish Antarctic Expeditions.
Turkish Polar Research Activities and national/international developments in this field were given in the relevant article in a chronological order, starting from the history of Turkish Polar Research Studies dating back to the 1960s, inclusion of the Republic of Türkiye in the Antarctic Treaty System in 1995, the regularly organized National Antarctic Science Expeditions in the following years and the articles that were formed with these research activities.
In parallel with the scientific studies and social interest in Polar Studies, which are growing day by day in Turkiye;
