European Polar Board (EPB), which was established by the European Science Foundation in 1995, has been an entity that brings together polar science activities of European countries on a common ground and acts as a cooperation platform. As Turkey has increased both national and international researches in Polar Sciences since 2017, joint studies are conducted with EPB as well, and this cooperation is planned to be enhanced.
Polar Regions - both the Arctic and the Antarctic - are at the top of the list of the most attractive regions for scientists. In polar research where international cooperation is of high importance in both logistical and scientific terms, countries have to be in continuous contact with each other.
Turkey conducts polar studies in cooperation with other countries under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Turkey, with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and under the coordination of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute. In this context, Turkey took the initiative to become a member of the European Polar Board (EPB), and the application was granted at the EPB Autumn 2020 General Assembly Meeting on 15-16 October 2020.
